Good advice. The advance option by UrriTrek is indeed a way to enjoy the Camino de Costa Rica. Challenging but not too challenging for strong young people in good physical condition. We’ve had Teresa complete the Trek in 5 days, Bobby and Geoba in 7 days, Brian in 9 days and so forth. Going fast to set a FKT we’ve had Ligia, Fidel, Sandra, Juan Pablo, Andrea, and Elena. Nine days is a good balance between challenge and taking in the full experience!

Solo hiker Estimated Costs •The average stay is about $40 US dollars per person with breakfast; dinners are about $8/lunch $6/. They are easily arranged. •The guide is $80 (for one person or for a group )per day and you have to pick up his/her expenses which are usually a little less but it’s almost as though you are paying for it sharing the cost of one person among the group. •Transport to and from trailhead is $150 for a maximum of 4. Bus from San Jose to Siquirres and Taxi there after as explained in the guide are about $50. And bus from Quepos to San Jose is about $10. •There is about another $100 in special guide fees to cross on the indigenous territory Section 3 and the private forest reserve Section 4 to be shared by group. •If you want your heavy things transported from lodge to lodge, there are local taxis that vary depending on the Distance because they have to loop around and this is sometimes more than an hour drive can be about $20-$60/ per transfer. One transfer would be $100 [Pejibaye to Rio Macho] •The Camino de Costa Rica itself is free except for those two sections I mentioned above.

It’s much more interesting to go with UrriTrek. If you go alone you need to make ahead of time your own reservations. You need to get a Kolbi chip when you arrive at the airport and comunícate via WhatsApp up with the hosts. There are lots of places without cell coverage . It usually means I have to help you by communicating with me via +506 6036-6199. Its better to enlist UrriTrek’s assistance. Hardly anyone speak any language other than Spanish or Cabecar. But yes we have about 10 people on the trail doing it alone now.

If you get a chance you shoukd get the recently published guide book on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Evan-Brashier/dp/1737139308 This group of young Costa Ricans offers small group expeditions you could consider getting an itinerary from them and seeing if that works for you. They know all the cool things along the route to interact with local people and have great experiences. I would say you could do it in their 11 day offers.

Emma, So glad you are interested. Late June through mid July is actually a good time. There is usually a nice window if good weather around early July called “ veranillo de San Juan”. But even if you miss that window, weather is ok morning through mid afternoon, then it rains snd evenings can be lovely. The beginning and end will be hot and humid but much of the rest of the trail ok. It is also greener and animals more active than in the dry Jan- April time. The Atlantic weather system is different from the Pacific so rainy afternoons in a part of the trail should be expected any time of the year. I hope that’s helpful.

A certified bilingual guide charges $80-$100/ day plus expenses and there is a person that knows the route well a local guide who does not speak English who is actually one of the best guides I’ve ever had and he might accompany you for much less and in some places they might charge much less for his stay. We can try to set this up is you decide. Try to find 2-3 friends to go with you. That’s the best way.
